7 Questions to Align Your Dreams with God’s Will: A Believer’s Guide for Young Christians

Feb 17 / your sendyouth team

Many young Christians carry big dreams in their hearts. Some want to become doctors, engineers, teachers, entrepreneurs, pastors, or media creators. Others simply want to live meaningful lives that please God and help their families and communities.

Yet behind these dreams, many quietly struggle with questions. Am I on the right path? Is God pleased with what I am pursuing? What if I make the wrong choice? Sometimes we move forward with confidence. Other times, we feel confused, stuck, or unsure.

At SendYouth International, we often meet young people who are talented, hardworking, and full of vision, but unsure of God’s direction. They are doing many good things, yet still wondering if they are doing the right thing.

Learning to align your dreams with God’s will is not about killing your passion. It is about allowing God to guide your passion. When your plans agree with His purpose, your life gains peace, direction, and lasting impact.

Let us look at seven simple questions that can help you walk in God’s will.
1. Does This Dream Honour God?
Start here. Ask yourself: Will this bring glory to God or only to me?

The Bible says, “Whatever you do, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus” (Colossians 3:17, NLT).
If your dream pushes you to compromise your faith, lie, cheat, or forget God, it needs correction.

2. Have I Prayed Seriously About It?
Many people plan first and pray later. But God wants prayer to come first.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart… He will show you which path to take” (Proverbs 3:5–6, NLT).

Prayer is not just talking. It is also listening. Take time daily to ask God for direction.

3. Does God’s Word Support This Dream?
God will never lead you against His Word.

“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet” (Psalm 119:105, NLT).

If your dream encourages pride, revenge, immorality, or dishonesty, it is not from God. Use the Bible as your guide.

4. What Are My True Motives?
Ask yourself honestly: Why do I want this?
Is it for status? Approval? Competition? Or service?

“Search me, O God, and know my heart” (Psalm 139:23, NLT).

God cares about your heart, not just your success.

5. Have I Sought Wise Counsel?
Many young people make big decisions alone. This is risky.

“Plans succeed through good counsel” (Proverbs 20:18, NLT).

Talk to mentors, pastors, parents, and mature believers. God often speaks through wise people.

6. Am I Willing to Grow and Prepare?
God’s will often comes with preparation.
A student in Jos once dreamed of becoming a media missionary. Instead of waiting for miracles, he learned video editing, studied Scripture, and joined church media. Today, he serves effectively.

“Work hard at whatever you do” (Ecclesiastes 9:10, NLT).

Dreams grow through discipline.

7. Am I Ready to Trust God’s Timing?
This is one of the hardest parts.
Some dreams take time. Some change. Some come later than expected.

“Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for Him” (Psalm 37:7, NLT).

Delays are not always denials. Sometimes God is preparing you.

A Simple Biblical Way to Align Your Dreams
Here is a practical guide you can follow:
Step 1: Pray Daily
Spend 10–15 minutes asking God for direction.
Step 2: Read Scripture
Focus on Proverbs, Psalms, and the Gospels.
Step 3: Write Your Dreams
Put your goals in a journal. Review them with God.
Step 4: Seek Guidance
Meet regularly with a mentor or youth leader.
Step 5: Take Small Steps
Do something useful every week toward your goal.
Step 6: Review and Adjust
Ask God often: “Am I still on Your path?”

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Many young Christians fall into these traps:
- Thinking every good idea is God’s will
- Copying others without praying
- Ignoring godly advice
- Rushing because of pressure
- Giving up too quickly

Remember: God’s plan is personal. Yours will not look like someone else’s.

Walk with God, Not Ahead of Him
Aligning your dreams with God’s will is not a one-time prayer. It is a daily walk.

When you choose prayer, Scripture, counsel, and patience, God shapes your vision. Your dreams become tools for impact, not stress.

At SendYouth International, we believe God is raising a generation that knows His voice and walks in His purpose. You are part of that generation.

Do not chase success alone. Chase God first.
