"Debt, Dreams, and the Weight of Survival"

"Just because you can buy it now doesn't mean you can afford it."

That sentence has become harder to hear in a world where almost everything can be paid for later.

A new phone. A laptop for work. Clothes for an event. Even groceries.

Across Africa, more young people are turning to credit simply to keep up with everyday life. In South Africa, reports show that around 85% of people under 35 have store cards, reflecting how common debt has become among young adults facing rising living costs and uncertain incomes. Similar conversations are happening in Nigeria and Ghana, where many young people on X and TikTok openly joke about being "broke before payday" or surviving on borrowed money until the next salary.

Behind the memes is a reality that isn't funny.

Many young people are carrying financial pressure that few people see.

So let me ask you something.
Are you building a future, or just paying off the past?

When Survival Becomes a Cycle
There is nothing shameful about facing financial hardship.

Life is expensive. Jobs are difficult to find. Families often depend on one income to support many people. Sometimes borrowing feels like the only option.

The danger comes when debt quietly becomes a lifestyle instead of a temporary solution.

One loan leads to another. One missed payment becomes several. Before long, your biggest dream is no longer starting a business, serving in ministry, or building a family. It is simply catching up.

That is a heavy way to live.

What Wisdom Says About Debt
The Bible says,

"Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender." — Proverbs 22:7 (NLT)

This verse is not meant to shame people who owe money. It simply tells the truth about debt.

Debt creates obligations. It limits freedom. It can place enormous pressure on our decisions.

God's desire is not for us to live trapped by fear or financial bondage but to grow in wisdom and faithful stewardship.

Needs, Wants, and Honest Decisions
One of the hardest financial lessons is learning the difference between what we need and what we simply want.

Social media makes this difficult.
Every scroll introduces another lifestyle to admire. Another gadget to upgrade. Another vacation to compare yourself with.

But wisdom asks different questions.
  • Do I truly need this?
  • Can I afford it without creating unnecessary pressure?
  • Will this purchase help the life God is calling me to build?
Those questions may not be exciting, but they often protect our future.

God Cares About More Than Your Bank Account
Financial pressure can make us feel like failures. But your balance is not your identity. Your debt does not define your future.

God invites us to bring every burden to Him, including our financial worries. He also calls us to take practical steps: creating a budget, seeking wise counsel, avoiding unnecessary debt where possible, working diligently, and learning contentment while trusting Him to provide.
Faith does not replace wisdom. It strengthens us to practice it.

Final Thoughts
If money has become a constant source of anxiety, remember this:
You are not behind because life has been difficult.
You are not less valuable because your finances are under pressure.
Start where you are. Make one wise decision today. Then another tomorrow.
Little steps, guided by God's wisdom, often lead to lasting freedom.
