Many young Christians ask the same question at some point: Why am I here? What is God’s plan for my life? You may be in school, learning a trade, searching for a job, serving in church, or trying to find your place in society. At times, it can feel confusing. Others seem to be moving ahead, while you feel stuck.
But here is the truth: God has not forgotten you. Your life is not an accident. He has a purpose for you, and you can begin to walk in it today.
The Bible says, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago” (Ephesians 2:10, NLT). God’s purpose is real, personal, and meaningful.
Why Many Young People Struggle with Purpose
In today’s world, many voices compete for your attention. Social media shows you “successful” people every day. Friends compare achievements. Society pushes you to chase money, status, and comfort.
Because of this, many young believers feel pressure. Some feel behind. Others feel lost.
Common struggles include:
• Fear of making the wrong decision
• Comparing yourself to others
• Lack of guidance or mentorship
• Pressure from family and society
• Doubt about your abilities
Christian writer Rick Warren once wrote in The Purpose Driven Life that life only makes sense when we understand God’s purpose. Without that understanding, people run in many directions but feel empty inside.
God’s Purpose Begins with Knowing Him
Before God shows you what to do, He first works on who you are becoming.
Jesus said, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need” (Matthew 6:33, NLT).
This means purpose starts with relationship.
When you walk closely with God through prayer, Bible reading, and obedience, He begins to guide your steps. You may not see the full picture at once. But He reveals it little by little.
Purpose is not only about career. It is about character, faith, and service.
Practical Steps to Discover God’s Purpose
Finding God’s purpose is not magic. It is a journey. Here are simple steps you can start today:
1. Pray for Direction Daily
Talk to God honestly. Ask Him to lead you.
Pray like this:
“Lord, show me Your will. Help me to obey You.”
James 1:5 promises that God gives wisdom freely to those who ask.
2. Study God’s Word
The Bible shapes your thinking and values. It helps you know what pleases God.
Start with:
• Psalms for encouragement
• Proverbs for wisdom
• Gospels for learning from Jesus
3. Discover Your Gifts
God has placed talents in you. It may be teaching, leadership, music, business, technology, or helping others.
Ask yourself:
• What do I enjoy doing?
• What do people often appreciate in me?
• Where do I feel useful?
These can point to your purpose.
4. Serve Where You Are
Do not wait for a “big opportunity.”
Serve in church. Help in your community. Support youth programs. Volunteer.
Jesus said, “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones” (Luke 16:10, NLT).
5. Learn from Mentors
Talk to mature Christians. Learn from their mistakes and wisdom.
Many Christian leaders in Africa today grew through mentorship and discipleship. Blogs like Desiring God and Christianity Today also remind believers that spiritual growth happens best in community.
A Real-Life Example
A young lady from Ibadan once shared her story at a youth meeting. She felt confused after finishing secondary school. Her friends were moving abroad. She felt left behind.
Instead of giving up, she joined a church youth group. She began praying regularly and serving in children’s ministry. Over time, she discovered her passion for teaching. Today, she is training young girls and mentoring students.
She says, “I found my purpose when I stopped chasing people’s approval and started seeking God’s direction.”
Purpose Is a Journey, Not a Race
God’s plan does not happen overnight. Some seasons are for learning. Others are for waiting. Some are for stepping out in faith.
Proverbs 16:9 says, “We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps” (NLT).
Trust Him with your timing.
