How to Grow Strong Leaders God’s Way!

Oct 2 / Your SendYouth Team

Leadership is one of the greatest needs of our time. Across Africa and around the world, people are looking for men and women who can guide with wisdom, courage, and integrity. But real strength in leadership doesn’t come from money, titles, or status; it comes from God. When we grow leaders God’s way, we raise people who serve with humility, live with integrity, and inspire others to follow Christ.

Why Leadership Matters Today
Young people in Africa are assuming leadership roles earlier than ever, whether in schools, businesses, churches, or online communities. According to the African Development Bank, more than 60% of Africa’s population is under 25. That means the future leaders of our nations are already here.

But here’s the challenge: many feel unprepared. Without guidance, leadership can become about power or self-promotion. We’ve seen what happens when leaders chase wealth or control: corruption grows, trust fades, and people suffer. Yet when leaders follow biblical values, leadership becomes service. As Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant” (Matthew 20:26, NLT).
That’s the kind of leadership Africa and the world need today.

Lessons from the Bible on Leadership
The Bible gives us a blueprint for leadership. From Moses guiding Israel, Deborah leading with courage, to Paul mentoring Timothy, Scripture is full of practical lessons:

  • Leadership is stewardship. Leaders are caretakers of people and resources God has entrusted to them (1 Corinthians 4:2).
  • Character comes before charisma. God looks at the heart, not outward appearances (1 Samuel 16:7).
  • Leadership requires humility. Jesus washed His disciples’ feet to show us that greatness is rooted in service (John 13:14–15).
  • Leaders multiply leaders. Paul told Timothy, “Teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others” (2 Timothy 2:2, NLT).
These lessons aren’t just for pastors or church elders. They’re for every young man and woman who wants to make a positive impact on their world.

How to Grow as a Godly Leader
Becoming a leader God can use doesn’t happen overnight. It takes intention, discipline, and faith. Here are some practical steps:
1. Build Your Life on God’s Word
The strongest leaders are grounded in Scripture. The Bible shapes our values and keeps us aligned with God’s will. If you wish to grow as a leader, make daily Bible reading a habit. Even starting with one chapter a day can transform the way you think and lead.
2. Seek Mentorship
No leader grows in isolation. Timothy became who he was because Paul invested in him. In many African cultures, elders guide the younger generation through wisdom and correction. Look for a mentor in your church or community; someone you admire and who lives out their faith daily.
3. Practice Servant Leadership
True leadership is not about being “the boss.” It’s about serving others. That might look like helping a classmate succeed, encouraging a co-worker, or volunteering in your church. Servant leadership may seem small at first, but it’s the heart of God’s design for influence.
4. Develop Practical Skills
Along with spiritual growth, leaders need practical skills, like communication, problem-solving, and decision-making. Attend leadership workshops, read books, and practice these skills in everyday life. Small responsibilities prepare you for bigger ones.
5. Stay Rooted in Prayer
Leadership can be heavy. Without prayer, it’s easy to burn out. Jesus Himself often withdrew to pray before making big decisions. Strong leaders today must also seek God’s wisdom through prayer—especially in difficult moments.

A Real-Life Example
Take the story of a young Christian entrepreneur in Lagos. She started selling farm produce with very little capital. Instead of cutting corners, she chose to run her business with honesty and fairness. She trained young women in her community, teaching them both business skills and biblical values. Over time, her business grew, and today she employs others, mentors them, and uses her platform to share her faith.
Her story shows that leadership isn’t about age, wealth, or fame; it’s about influence. And when influence is used God’s way, lives are changed.

What Makes a Strong Godly Leader?
If you want to grow into a leader God can use, here are some qualities to develop:
Faithfulness – Be reliable, even in small tasks (Luke 16:10).
Integrity – Do what’s right even when no one is watching.
Vision – See God’s bigger picture and inspire others toward it.
Compassion – Care for people, not just results.
Courage – Stand for truth even when it costs you.
These are qualities you can start building today, wherever you are.

Final Encouragement
Africa needs leaders who are strong in character, rooted in Christ, and ready to serve. Whether you’re a student, young professional, or ministry worker, you are already influencing someone. The question is: how will you use that influence?
Take time today to grow in God’s Word, seek mentorship, serve others, and pray for wisdom. Remember Paul’s words to Timothy: “Fan into flame the spiritual gift God gave you” (2 Timothy 1:6, NLT).

At Send Youth International, we believe God is raising a generation of strong leaders who will impact Africa and beyond. You can be part of that story—right where you are, today.
