If You Stay, Are You Wasting Your Life?

The last time we talked about Japa, we sat with the question: Should I stay or should I go?
And we realised that God watches over our coming and our going.
But there is another question that keeps young people awake at night. It is quieter than the first, but just as heavy.
If I stay, am I wasting my life?
You see the posts. Friends landing abroad. New cars, new passports, new accents. And somewhere in your chest, a fear whispers: Everyone who matters is leaving. What if staying means you are settling? What if you are just afraid?
Let me tell you something I wish someone had told me earlier. Staying is not the same as settling. And leaving is not the same as living.
The Conversation No One Is Having Online
Scroll through Twitter or Instagram, and the message is loud. Japa is the goal. The only people who stay are those who cannot leave. But that is not the full story.
Recently, I saw a thread where a young woman in Lagos shared her struggle. She has a good job, a small business, and a church community she loves. But every week, someone asks her: Why are you still here? She wrote: "I feel like I have to apologise for choosing to build where I grew up."
Thousands liked it. Because she said what many feel.
There is a quiet pressure to pursue your ambition through geography. But ambition is not a flight number. And calling is not a visa stamp.
What If Calling Starts Where You Are?
Let me ask you the bridge question: What would "calling" look like where you are?
Not where you wish you were. Not where your cousin is. Right here.
Maybe calling looks like being the honest friend in a group that cuts corners. Maybe it looks like running the youth Bible study because no one else will. Maybe it looks like starting that small business that serves your neighbourhood, even if it never goes viral.
Calling is not always dramatic. It is often ordinary faithfulness in a place you did not choose.
What God Says About Your Future Exactly Where You Stand
There is a verse that is famous for its promise. But we often skip the context.
"For I know the plans I have for you," says the Lord. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me." — Jeremiah 29:11–13 (NLT)
Here is what we miss. God spoke these words to people who could not leave.
They were exiles, stuck in a foreign land they did not choose. And He told them to build houses, plant gardens, and seek the peace of the city where He had placed them.
They were exiles, stuck in a foreign land they did not choose. And He told them to build houses, plant gardens, and seek the peace of the city where He had placed them.
God did not say, "Wait until you get home to start living." He said, "Live fully right there."
If God can give exiles a future and hope, He can give you a future right where you are.
How to Know If You Are Wasting Your Life
Let me give you a simpler test than geography.
You are wasting your life if you are not seeking God. You are wasting your life if you are not growing. You are wasting your life if you are only waiting for someday instead of serving today.
But staying in your country while seeking God, serving your neighbour, and growing in character? That is not a waste. That is the opposite of waste.
A Prayer for the One Who Stays
Father, I feel the pressure to prove my worth by leaving. But You have placed me here for now. Show me what my calling looks like where I am. Give me eyes to see the work You have for me today. And let me never believe that staying means settling. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Your Next Step
You do not have to apologise for staying. But you also do not have to stay the same.
This week, ask God: What is one thing You want me to build, heal, or start right where I am? Then take one small step.
At SendYouth International, we believe a generation that knows its calling is not tied to a passport is a generation that can build anywhere, even at home.
